Arsenal and Chelsea: Manchester clubs eliminated in the semi-finals

Both Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC faced the football heavyweights from Manchester in the semi-finals of this year’s FA Cup. Both games have already taken place in Wembley, with London clubs prevailing: The Blues beat Manchester United 3-1, causing the Red Devils their first defeat after the Corona break. Arsenal surprisingly won 2-0 over Manchester City, both times Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

For Arsenal, the FA Cup (by the way, the official name “The Emirates FA Cup”) is something of a favorite competition. No other team won the FA Cup so often, the Gunners won the coveted trophy 13 times. Chelsea won the cup eight times.

Arsenal – Chelsea: balance sheet speaks for Gunners

So far, the two London rivals have met each other in competitive matches. Arsenal won 76 times, Chelsea 65 times, and draws 59 times. The last comparison was at the end of January, when both teams split 2-2 at Stamford Bridge. The first leg in the Emirates was won by coach Frank Lampard’s team 2-1, previously there was the UEFA Europa League final in Baku, which Chelsea won clearly 4-1. The last Arsenal win against Chelsea came over a year and a half ago (2-0 in January 2019).

In the FA Cup, there was the duel between the two teams 20 times, Arsenal won 9 times, Chelsea 5 times, a game ended in a draw.

The current shape curve

Arsenal lost only one of the last eight games. It was the derby against Tottenham of all places, but the trend in the team of coach Mikel Arteta is clearly going up. In particular, the successes against champions Liverpool (2: 1 in the league) and Man City (2: 0 in the FA Cup) caused a stir: The Gunners can be expected again. Not necessarily in the Premier League, because the train seems to have left for international business, but it does for the FA Cup final. A victory there and one would at least save the season by qualifying for the Europa League.

Chelsea made a conspicuous mistake after the corona break (2: 3 at West Ham, 0: 3 at Sheffield United) and, if it goes really stupid, can even gamble away the qualification for the Champions League that was actually believed to be safe. Arsenal advantage: The Gunners do not have to concentrate on further competitions after the end of the Premier League, while Chelsea has to travel to Bayern a week after the FA Cup final.

Chelsea: Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech not yet in the squad

The two Chelsea newcomers Timo Werner (came from Leipzig) and Hakim Ziyech (Ajax Amsterdam) are neither registered for the Champions League nor for the final of the FA Cup. This means that Ziyech and Werner can train with their new teammates at the Cobham training center, but will not play a role in the rest of the season. This also applies to Kai Havertz should he join Chelsea. Otherwise, Lampard can fall back on his full star ensemble.

Arsenal probably without Özil again

Arsenal worries about the goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The goalkeeper struggles with a ligament stretch, his replacement would once again be Emiliano Martínez. Likewise questionable is the use of Mesut Özil, who officially has back problems but doesn’t play a big role anyway under Arteta. Gabriel Martinelli is almost certain to fail. The offensive youngster is suffering from a knee injury.
