The Rome Derby is one of the most prestigious and explosive on this continent. Both on the grass of the Stadio Olimpico and in the stands, in Curva Sud (Roma) and Curva Nord (Lazio). The next derby is scheduled for Sunday, January 26th 2020 in the “Eternal City”. Kick-off is at 6 p.m. (CET).
AS Roma – Lazio Roma: statistics
The last 10 Rome derbies in Serie A went more in favor of the Giallorossi: 6 wins for the Roma, 2 for Lazio with 2 draws. However, the Laziali have won only once since 2012 when they were nominally the visiting team – like they are on January 26th.
The current form curve
The importance of a victory in the Rome derby has grown historically: Since both teams were not strong enough for the race for the Italian championship title, the “Scudetto”, for many years it was mainly about being at least the best team in the eternal city. AS Roma is already 14 points behind leaders Juventus, but in fifth place still has every chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Bitter from the perspective of AS Roma: midfielder Nicolò Zaniolo contracted a cruciate ligament in the game against Juventus and will be out for the rest of the season.
Lazio has not lost in the league since September (!) and they are seven points better than AS Rome. Lazio is still in third place within striking distance of the top duo Juve / Inter. Another advantage of Lazio: they have one league game less than the rest and could knock at the top with another win.
The last duel between Roma and Lazio
The first leg in September 2019 ended 1:1, but a supposed winning goal from Lazios Manuel Lazzari (90 + 2.), which did not count due to an offside position, caused a lot of stir. The referee had to pull out the yellow card seven times that day, but there was no dismissal.
