It was a memorable evening at the Westfalenstadion! Over 80,000, what a stage for a high class Champions League duel with the star ensemble from Paris as a guest. In the end, Dortmund’s Borussia won 2:1 against the French champions. BVB has given itself a good, if not outstanding, starting position for the second leg in Paris. The round of 16 second leg match between PSG and Dortmund will take place on March 11 in the Parc des Princes, kick-off is at 9 p.m. Our preview with bets, statistics and predictions for PSG-BVB.
Borussia Dortmund – PSG: That’s how the first leg went
PSG star Neymar equalized BVB’s lead just a quarter of an hour before the final whistle. There should not have been a few who now expected another Paris goal and were completely wrong. Instead, 19-year-old winter newcomer Erling Haaland got the 2-1 through a powerful long-range shot. His second goal that evening and also his tenth goal in this Champions League season, after wetting eight times for Salzburg in the group stage.
PSG is still waiting for a victory against the black and yellow team, the French lost in three duels once, and there were two draws. Small footnote: Thomas Tuchel lost his last 7 competitive games as coach of Mainz and Paris against BVB.
The current shape curve
Lucien Favre’s team came out of the winter break strong and scored 22 goals in the first five games after the winter break. Winter newcomer Erling Haaland in particular hit like a meteorite. The 19-year-old Norwegian scored eight goals in the first three games. With Emre Can from Juventus Turin, another top-class player was signed on loan, especially in midfield, BVB is now equipped with tremendous quality. There was a big dent on Matchday 21 in the 3-4 defeat in Leverkusen and in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup, where Borussia – like last year – beat Werder Bremen.
PSG have won all league games since the penultimate group game at Real Madrid (2-2) – the only exception is a 3: 3 at AS Monaco and a 4: 4 at Amiens. The Tuchel team is almost as good as champions thanks to a ten-point advantage over Marseille. At the round of 16 first leg in Dortmund, PSG had surprisingly few accents on the offensive and deservedly left the field as a loser.
Personnel: Dortmund probably Reus again, PSG has to do without yellow-banned
Paris full-back Meunier and midfield star Verratti are missing, who saw their third yellow card shortly before the end and have to watch blocked.
BVB captain Marco Reus is currently still suffering from a muscle injury that the international suffered during the cup out in Bremen. According to the latest reports, Reus could already be part of the Dortmund squad for the second leg on March 11 in Paris. But another midfield man is sure to be part of the party: Julian Brandt is fully operational again after his ankle injury.
The situation at PSG looks somewhat less relaxed: Paris full-back Thomas Meunier and midfield star Marco Verratti are missing in the Champions League second leg against Dortmund. Both saw their third yellow card in the first leg shortly before the end. The thigh injury from defender Marquinhos, who was last represented by Thiago Silva or Thilo Kehrer, is persistent. Ex-Dortmund’s Abdou Diallo should not be fit for the second leg either.
PSG-BVB: Sky shows the second leg live
Streaming provider DAZN had the exclusive right to broadcast the first leg of this Champions League round of 16 between Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain live in Germany. The return leg in Paris will now be shown exclusively on Sky – by the way, immediately after the whistle of the Derby Mönchengladbach – Cologne, which will be rescheduled that Wednesday. Kick-off on March 11, 2020 is at 9 p.m. DAZN shows excerpts of the game about 40 minutes after the final whistle on its streaming portal.
Dortmund – PSG: bets, tips and odds
PSG does not want to fail again in the round of 16. In 2018 the French flew out against Real Madrid, last year they were surprisingly eliminated against Manchester United despite a 2-0 first-leg win at Old Trafford. Now the 1: 2 in the first leg at BVB. PSG’s self-image clearly provides for the progress of the team around Neymar, a further end in the round of 16 could even prematurely end the era in Paris.
Our bookmakers see Paris Saint-Germain clearly as a favorite. The odds for a home win for Mbappé, Neymar & Co. are currently 1.60. BVB receives the odds 5.00 on an away win. The Dortmund game often depends on the presence of Marco Reus, who, as written above, is likely to be back in the squad. Nevertheless, we expect PSG to be successful and we expect more goals than in the first leg. Our recommendation: play the bet “Over 3.5 goals”! Both teams stand for strong offensive lines and are among the most hungry clubs in their leagues. For at least 4 goals in this Champions League first leg, Tipster has a odds of 2.0.
