The 2. Bundesliga has so many controversial derbies in the schedule this year: Karlsruhe against Stuttgart, Fürth against Nuremberg, Aue against Dresden. But only a real city derby: HSV against St. Pauli! On Sunday, February 22, 2020, Hamburg’s two local rivals will meet at Volksparkstadion. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.
HSV – St. Pauli: statistics
The Hamburger SV and FC St. Pauli faced each other 32 times. The HSV won 19 times, the Kiezkicker 5 times, the Hamburg derby ended 8 times with a draw. In the 2nd Bundesliga, however, there was only the duel 3 times – of course, the HSV has only played 2. Bundesliga since 2018. The second division balance sheet looks very balanced here: a win for each team in a tie. Top fact: Hamburger SV last win against St. Pauli at Volksparkstadion was in 2001, at that time in an epic Bundesliga duel with 4:3 win after 3: 0 half-time lead.
The current form: HSV wants to consolidate ascent place
With two sovereign victories against Nuremberg (4:1) and in Bochum (3:1), HSV came out of the winter break. The result crisis from November and December, when you won just seven games (including a 1-1 draw at Wehen Wiesbaden and a 1-2 loss in Osnabrück), seems to have been overcome. The HSV is aiming for advancement. In view of the strongest offensive in the league and the weakening competition from Stuttgart, Heidenheim, Aue and Fürth, the team of coach Dieter Hecking is also on target.
St. Pauli ended the football year 2019 brilliantly with a 3:0 against Bielefeld. After the winter break, Jos Luhukay’s team lost clearly in Fürth (0:3), but at least got one point against the favored Stuttgart (1:1). The view at FC St. Pauli goes more downwards than upwards, the relegation ranks are only two points away. The biggest flaw of the FCSP: The brutal weakness at away games! Still waiting for the first three in a foreign country, the brown-whites were only able to get four lean points in away games – only Dynamo Dresden is even worse in this regard.
The last duel: St. Pauli wrestles HSV
It was a big surprise when FC Sankt Pauli defeated HSV 2-0 in the Millerntor Stadium in last September. St. Pauli had to wait almost 60 years for a home win against his big neighbor. Dimitrios Diamantakos (18th minute) and HSV defender Rick van Drongelen with their own goal (62nd) ensured the Kiezkicker’s first “city championship” since 2011. At the same time, it was HSV’s first competitive loss under coach Hecking.
