At the end of May, one of the biggest games in German club football is usually on the schedule, but like so many events, the DFB Cup final was postponed of course. The German Cup final between the Werkself and the record cup winner from Munich will take place on July 4, 2020 in the Berlin Olympiastadion. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. (CEST).
At the end of April, the DFB decided that the cup final could not be played on May 23. It is now clear that the final will be played on the weekend after the last Bundesliga matchday on July 4th. The final date mentioned, however, would be after the end of some professional contracts, which are valid until June 30. It is extremely questionable whether the loan players Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic could be deployed on the Munich side. One thing is certain, however: The final between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Bayern Munich, like all Bundesliga games after the Corona break, will take place in front of empty ranks. An absolute novelty in the 85-year history of the DFB Cup final.
Leverkusen fans start petition to postpone the DFB Cup final
Bayer Leverkusen are in the DFB Cup final for the first time since 2009 (then 0-1 against Werder Bremen) – and then of all things in the Corona crisis. Leverkusen fans are demanding that the final in Berlin should be postponed until a time when fans can go back to the stadiums. In an online petition, over 2,000 supporters have already been won for the transfer within two days. The supporters want to put public pressure on the club and the DFB and postpone the final. However, it is very unlikely that the DFB and the authorities will comply with the request.
Bayer vs Bayern: First encounter in the final
Leverkusen against FC Bayern has never been seen in the DFB Cup final. In cup games, however, you have already dueled six times. The Munich team won five times, the Rheinländer won once: In the quarter-finals of the 2008/2009 season, the Werkself won 4-2 against Bayern. The last cup duel took place two years ago in Leverkusen. It was the semi-finals, which ended very clearly with a 6-2 away win by FCB.
The current shape curve: Bayern want the double
The championship has the team of coach Hansi Flick almost certain. FC Bayern is still unbeaten in 2020 and is of course going to the final against Bayer 04 as a favorite. For Munich, it is also a relief that one can probably save energy two weeks before the final, since there is nothing in the league more will go. For the team of coach Peter Bosz, it will probably be about the Champions League spots until the end. Apart from the home defeats against Wolfsburg (1: 4) and FC Bayern (2: 4), Leverkusen also performed well and won 13 of the last 16 competitive games.
Cup finals live on ARD and on Sky
As always, the German Cup final will be broadcast on free TV in Germany. ARD will air live from the Olympic Stadium on July 4th. Pay TV broadcaster Sky, which shows all games of the DFB-Pokal 2019/20 live, broadcasts live and, in addition to the original stadium sound, offers a channel for the final match between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, on which fan songs are recorded. Kick-off is on July 4th at 8 p.m. (CEST).
