Dortmund almost got Sadio Mané

In 2011 Sadio Mané’s European adventure began. At that time he moved as a 19-year-old from the Senegalese club Generation Foot to Ligue 2 in France, to join FC Metz. Football had been part of Mané’s earliest childhood. His parents wanted him to be a teacher. Sadio Mané discovered his passion for football early on. First in his home village of Banbali in the south of the country, later in Dakar. Before and after training, he sold tea to make a living. “Why should I want 10 Ferrari, 20 watches and 2 jets?” Asks Mané today. “I don’t need luxury cars and houses. I grew up poor, I played football barefoot. I can help my people with what I earn through football today, ”he says with an unmistakable hint of humility.

In the capital of Senegal, he was sent to test training the Generation Foot youth academy founded in 2000. Generation Foot has already produced a number of well-known players: the former Freiburg Papiss Cissé or Ismaïla Sarr, who is currently playing for Watford. Their path also led via FC Metz. He quickly became part of the regular staff at the Lorraine, even if he did not shine as a goal machine at the time.

Only a year later, FC Red Bull from Salzburg signed him after he made it to the quarter-finals with the Senegalese Olympic selection in London. In Salzburg, Mané learned German, which he benefits from today when communicating with Jürgen Klopp. At this point in time, Klopp, at that time still in the service of Borussia Dortmund, had an eye on the fast left wing. But a change to BVB failed, instead he was sold for 15 million to Southampton FC. Mané later told Mirror: “I’ll be honest now: Southampton is a great club, but I didn’t want to go there. It was my wish to sign in Dortmund because Jürgen Klopp wanted me”.

In his first Premier League season, he managed a hat-trick at a record-breaking pace: The Senegalese needed only 176 seconds for three goals in the game against Aston Villa. He also scored three goals against Manchester City and even scored for Southampton in Klopp’s home debut in Anfield. At the latest, Mané was in the focus of the Reds, who ultimately committed him in summer 2016 for a whopping 41 million euros.

Together with Roberto Firmino, who had already moved from Liverpool to Hoffenheim in 2015, and Mohamed Salah, who was bought by AS Roma in 2017, he is still one of the most dangerous series of attacks in world football: the “Fab Three”. Mané scored double-digits every season, the 2018/19 season was certainly outstanding when he scored 22 times for the Klopp team in the Premier League alone.
